Mary Martin Mitchell
Commissioner of the Department of Revenue
Governor Kay Ivey appointed Mary Martin Mitchell as commissioner of the Alabama Department of Revenue on May 1, 2026. A seasoned legal and policy professional, she brings more than a decade of experience within the department, where she has played a central role in shaping tax policy and guiding complex legal matters.
Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Mitchell served as general counsel for the Department of Revenue, overseeing legal strategy, administrative law issues and high-level tax policy implementation. Since joining the department in 2013, she has risen through the ranks, earning a reputation for her deep institutional knowledge. Before entering state government, she served as a staff attorney for the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and practiced law at a private firm in Huntsville.
Commissioner Mitchell’s background includes extensive experience in tax legislation, regulatory compliance and complex litigation, positioning her as a key architect behind many of the department’s initiatives. Notably, she has been closely involved in the implementation and administration of the CHOOSE Act, helping ensure the program is executed effectively and in alignment with state law.
As commissioner, Commissioner Mitchell is focused on delivering clear guidance and consistent application of Alabama’s tax laws, while building on the department’s recent momentum and supporting the state’s continued economic growth with transparency and integrity.
