Governor Ivey Comments on Ongoing Effects of Tropical Storm Gordon

MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday commented on the response and ongoing effects of Tropical Storm Gordon. As of Wednesday morning, Gordon was downgraded to a tropical depression; yet, Alabama continues to see heavy rainfall as the storm moves across the South.
Gordon was a strong tropical storm when it made landfall near the Alabama-Mississippi border Tuesday night; however, Alabama received the brunt of the winds, storm surge and rain.
“I’m grateful to our state’s first responders and emergency managers for all of their efforts leading up to Tropical Storm Gordon coming ashore. The preparation, coordination and cooperation by citizens during this storm greatly minimized the impact across our state,” Governor Ivey said. “There are still significant power outages in south Alabama and power crews are working very hard to get electric service restored. If you are in the affected areas, please be aware of your surroundings and the crews that are out working to get utilities restored. I have also directed Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Hastings to travel to the Mobile area to tour the coast and to meet with local officials to evaluate the ongoing needs in the affected areas.”
The threat for flooding will remain in the days to come, as rain continues, and rivers begin to crest. Alabamians should stay alert of changing weather conditions as we feel effects of Gordon for the remainder of the week.
Governor Ivey continued, “Alabama is very fortunate to a great community of emergency managers and first responders that have worked tirelessly preparing and who are now busy assessing, responding and recovering from the impacts of Gordon. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all of those who are working to limit the lingering effects of Tropical Storm Gordon.”
A State Emergency Operations Team coordinating call is taking place this morning to discuss further assessments being conducted today. Evaluations of conditions will be ongoing throughout the day as Gordon recedes from the state.
