Main Street Alabama Day

Proclamation
By the Governor of Alabama
WHEREAS, Main Street Alabama is a Coordinating Program for the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which brings national attention to the downtown revitalization of our cities and expert technical assistance and training to the program’s participants; and
WHEREAS, the Main Street Alabama program is a community-based self-help program aimed at reversing the decline of central business districts, returning main streets to their traditional role as the centers of social and commercial activity and creating a healthy economic basis for growth and prosperity; and
WHEREAS, the citizens and officials in these communities have rallied together and organized to compete for the right to participate in the program through demonstration of commitment to the Four-Point Approach® of the National Main Street Center; implementation of a successful program of Organization, Design, Promotion, and Economic Vitality for their central business district; and dedication to become a successful model of downtown revitalization for the state; and
WHEREAS, since 2014, Designated Communities participating in the Main Street Alabama program have tracked their success and reported $243,907,770 in private investment, $64,721,556 in public investment, a net gain of 393 new businesses, a net gain of 1,654 new jobs and 47,868 volunteer hours; and
WHEREAS, in fiscal year 2017, Main Street Alabama will work with Alexander City, Anniston, Athens, Birmingham, Columbiana, Decatur, Dothan, Elba, Eufaula, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Heflin, Jasper, Marion, Monroeville, Montevallo, Opelika, Oxford, Selma, and Wetumpka and add up to three more communities in Spring, 2018, to continue growing this economic revitalization program across the great state of Alabama:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim August 22, 2017, as
Main Street Alabama Day
in the State of Alabama.
