"...adequate broadband access
is an enabler for economic development and for
enhancing the lives of our citizens," Governor Riley.
ConnectingAlabama is an exciting new program launched by Governor Riley and
his Alabama Broadband Initiative. This project is an effort to make
broadband (high-speed internet) available to all areas of the state, and to
increase the use of broadband technology to enhance education, healthcare,
public safety, agriculture, tourism, and more.
Current efforts are now underway to:
- Work with existing service providers to identify and map where broadband
service currently exists across the state – and to identify where there are
un-served or under-served areas - particularly in rural Alabama.
- Work with governmental, community and industry leaders from across the
state to articulate a clear vision for Alabama’s broadband future – and to
develop (and fund) technology adoption and growth plans in all sixty-seven
(67) counties.
- Work with media and others to communicate with all citizens of Alabama
about the ConnectingAlabama initiative – and to encourage technology
adoption as a key to local economic development and an enhanced quality of
life.
Over the next two years, efforts will focus on encouraging private
investment for high-speed internet deployment, and on promoting consumer
adoption. Through this effort, ConnectingAlabama will develop a roadmap for
the most efficient approach to realizing broadband accessibility and usage
throughout the state.

Stay tuned – a new dedicated web site is 'coming soon'...
...and stay connected to what is surely a landmark initiative for all
citizens of Alabama.
Taken from Governor Riley’s press release, "Broadband availability breaks
down barriers to jobs and careers in high-paying fields, it brings health
care to isolated areas, it offers new education opportunities for our
citizens, it enhances public safety, and it increases the number of services
that people can conveniently access from their homes and places of work. Our
rural communities need reliable broadband access. Eliminating under-served
and un-served areas in our state will provide greater opportunities and
benefits to all citizens of Alabama."
