CAMDEN (Governor’s Office) – Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday announced that J.E. Hobbs Elementary School was selected as the recipient of a $900,000 Apple grant made available through the White House ConnectED initiative.
As part of the grant, every student will receive an iPad, each teacher and administrator will receive a MacBook and iPad Mini along with an Apple TV for every classroom. In addition, teachers will receive training through workshops and have been assigned a team of Apple specialists to provide ongoing professional development and support as they incorporate this technology into their curriculum.
“Every child deserves to receive the best education possible, and the students at J.E. Hobbs Elementary School are being given a unique opportunity to learn in a creative, technology driven environment through this initiative,” Governor Bentley said. “I’m excited to see how the students, teachers and community will progress over the next year, through the use of new hands-on teaching software and devices.”
Apple has spent the last year installing and updating the school’s wireless infrastructure to prepare for the official rollout of the new devices.
J.E. Hobbs Elementary School Principal Shelton Frye said, “The vision and initiative of Apple and ConnectED will be the catalyst that we, at J.E. Hobbs Elementary School, will use to bridge the gap of achievement among our students and open more pathways of exploration. Thanks to this initiative, we will unlock limitless potentials within our students in their quests for success among chosen endeavors and in ensuring that each of them is college and career ready in this global society.”
J.E. Hobbs Elementary School is one of 114 schools throughout the U.S. to receive donations totaling $100 million. Other schools in Alabama served by this initiative include: Booker T. Washington High School, Tuskegee, AL; Francis Marion School, Marion, AL; Notasulga School, Notasulga, AL; and Tuskegee Public Elementary School, Tuskegee, AL.
