EXTENDING THE VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR THE 2017 UNITED STATES SENATE
SPECIAL RUNOFF ELECTION

WHEREAS Section 17-3-50, Code of Alabama (1975), provides that the “boards of registrars in the several counties of the state shall not register any person as a qualified elector within 14 days prior to any election;”

WHEREAS today, therefore, is the deadline for the registration of voters to participate in the United States Senate Special Runoff Election on Tuesday, September 26, 2017;

WHEREAS many state and local government offices are closed today as a result of the existing State of Emergency due to Hurricane Irma; and

WHEREAS it is essential to democratic government that every citizen have a fair opportunity to register to exercise his or her right to vote;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of the State of Alabama, pursuant to the emergency powers vested in me by §§ 31-9-8(7) and 31-9-13, Code of Alabama (1975), do hereby suspend the operation of § 17-3-50 insofar as it precludes the registration of voters after today for the 2017 United States Senate Special Runoff Election, and I hereby order the extension of the voter registration deadline to the close of business on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.  I further direct the boards of registrars in the several counties of the state to promptly notify me if their office is closed September 12 due to emergency conditions so that I may assess whether a further extension of the voter registration deadline is warranted.

DONE AND ORDERED this 11th day of September, 2017.

Kay Ivey
Governor
