“The people of Alabama deserve to know who influences their elected
officials, and
we should demand that legislators pass a law that will ensure full
disclosure. It is time to expose every single dime a lobbyist spends on
any public official.”
- Governor Bob Riley
In Alabama, a lobbyist can spend up to $91,000 per year on a single legislator without
being required to report it. That’s $250 a day that special interests are able to
spend entertaining officials without the public’s knowledge. Also, under current
law, those who lobby the executive branch for state grants or contracts are not required to register with the Ethics Commission. These practices maintain the insider
culture that has plagued Montgomery for so long and worsen the distrust Alabamians
feel toward state government.
Governor Riley’s proposal will:
- Require lobbyists to fully disclose any money spent on public officials and employees
on a quarterly basis. These disclosures would be posted on the Internet.
- Require those who lobby the Executive Branch to register with the Alabama Ethics
Commission in the same manner as they do for the Legislative Branch.
