Tom Surtees became Director of the Department of Industrial Relations on Sept. 15,
2007 after having served as Commissioner of Revenue for three years. Before joining
the Riley Administration in 2004, Mr. Surtees was Vice President of Human Resources
with Birmingham-based Citation Corp. Prior
to working at Citation, he was an employee
relations manager at Stockham Valves and Fittings, Inc. and a personnel manager
for Lamson and Sessions Co.
His community activities are numerous and include serving in volunteer leadership
positions with the American Cancer Society, PTA, Boys and Girls Club of Central
Alabama and the Friends of Rickwood. He has also been active throughout the years
in the Business Council of Alabama, American Foundry Society and the Alabama Cast
Metals Association. Mr. Surtees also served for four years on the Pleasant Grove
City Council and for six years on the Jefferson County Board of Education, four
of those as its President.
Mr. Surtees is a graduate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham having earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Business Administration degree.
He served in both the Alabama Army National Guard and the Army Reserves, retiring
in 1997 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
