Col. Chris Murphy became Director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety on Dec. 1, 2006 following a long career in law enforcement. Prior to joining the Riley Administration, Col. Murphy served as Special Agent in Charge of the Birmingham District Office of the United States Secret Service from 2002-2006. In that capacity, Col. Murphy was in charge of four Secret Service offices in Alabama and three offices in Mississippi. Before coming to the Birmingham District Office, Col. Murphy served as manager in the Secret Service’s field offices in Houston, Texas and Montgomery.
Col. Murphy began his career in law enforcement as a patrolman, corporal and detective with the Auburn Police Department in 1978. He earned his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Auburn University in 1981 and his Master degree in the Administration of Criminal Justice at Troy University in 1997.
