As a fifteen-year legislative veteran and two-term Secretary of State, Jim Bennett
joins the Riley Administration with a wealth of state government experience. Currently
the chairman of the Governor’s Commission on Constitutional Reform, Bennett will
retain that position in addition to overseeing the enforcement of labor legislation
and promotion of peaceful settlement of labor disputes at the Department of Labor.
No stranger to labor policy, Bennett once served as public affairs director for
the Alabama Labor Council, holding this post from 1971-1976. Additionally, he was
a member of the House of Representatives from Homewood from 1978-1983, and of the
Alabama Senate from 1983-1993. Bennett was appointed as Secretary of State in 1993
to fill a vacancy and won election by his own right in both 1994 and 1998. And,
from 1999-2000, he served as president of the
National Association of Secretaries
of State.
In 1962, Bennett received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Jacksonville
State University, where he presides as chairman of its Board of Trustees. He also
obtained a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration from the University
of Alabama in 1980.
During the 1960s, Bennett worked as an award-winning state capitol reporter for
the Birmingham Post Herald.
